Gerhard S. (“Sol”) Mundinger, M.D., M.B.A., is a dual board-certified plastic & facial plastic surgeon with expertise in craniofacial surgery, plastic surgery, microsurgery, and gender affirmation surgery.
A native of Madison, Mississippi, Dr. Mundinger graduated from St. Andrew’s High School in Ridgeland, Mississippi. He completed three undergraduate degrees at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor before earning his Medical Doctorate at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. During medical school, he completed a year-long Clinical Research Training Program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
Dr. Mundinger trained in the Johns Hopkins Hospital / University of Maryland / Shock Trauma integrated plastic surgery residency program with pioneering craniofacial surgeon Dr. Paul Manson. In further pursuit of his research interests during residency, he completed two years of clinical and basic science research training with craniofacial microsurgeon Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, focusing on face and hand transplantation, as well as clinical outcomes in pediatric and adult craniofacial trauma. During this time he was co-investigator on grants awarded by the Office of Naval Research and principal investigator for a Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation Fellowship.
Seeking further expertise in craniofacial surgery, he completed a comprehensive pediatric and adult craniofacial surgery fellowship with pioneering surgeons Drs. Joseph Gruss and Richard Hopper at Seattle Children’s Hospital / Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.
Prior to joining the Crane Center, he was the Director of Plastic Surgery and the Craniofacial Center Director at the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, and Associate Plastic Surgery Residency Director at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He was quickly promoted to Associate Professor of both Plastic Surgery and Anatomy/Cell Biology at LSU. He founded the NOLA Transgender Institute in 2018 to help improve access to experienced, quality care for transgender patients in New Orleans and the Gulf South.
During his time in academic practice, he sought additional training in Facial Femnization Surgery with FacialTeam in Marbella, Spain, and completed a Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in entrepreneurship at the Tulane A.B. Freeman School of Business.
Dr. Mundinger is the author of over 90 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 9 book chapters.He holds two medical device patents, and is a frequently invited lecturer and national and international meetings.
In 2021, he transitioned his practice to Austin, Texas with the Crane Center to focus on gender affirmation surgery. Dr. Mundinger performs the full compliment of gender affirming procedures, including Top Surgery, Labiaplasty, Vaginoplasty, Phalloplasty, Hair Transplantation, Facial Feminization Surgery, Tracheal Shave, Rhinoplasty, and Breast Augmentation.
Dr. Mundinger practices exclusively with the Crane Center for Transgender Surgery in Austin, Texas. Dr. Mundinger is a member of WPATH.
