Masculinization Surgery

What is Masculinization Surgery?

Masculinizing surgery for transgender men includes a number of gender-affirming procedures for the face and body that seek to better align a person’s appearance with their gender identity, reducing gender dysphoria. The goal is to replace the typically female characteristics of the face and body such as a softer jawline and hourglass shape with those that present as masculine.

These procedures are performed independently of transmasculine top and bottom surgeries such as breast tissue removal and phalloplasty. Every case is unique and these procedures may not be right for everyone. Your surgeon will work with you to determine the best plan to achieve your desired results.

Types of Masculinizing Surgery

Facial Masculinization Surgery

Facial masculinization surgery (FMS) includes a number of procedures to transform feminine characteristics of the jawline, hairline, nose and chin to give them a more masculine appearance.  These include brow lift and forehead contouring, implants to create the appearance of an Adam’s apple (thyroid cartilage), cosmetic adjustments to create a more angular jawline, chin implants and much more. Body Masculinization Surgery

Body masculinization seeks to replace the hourglass shape and other typically feminine-presenting characteristics of the female body with the more angular and V-shape of the male body. This involves targeting and removing fat cells from the lower abdomen, upper thighs and other areas where it tends to get stored. Additional sculpting to create a more angular appearance of the hips and buttocks can further the masculine-presenting appearance of the body. The type and extent of masculinizing surgery to pursue will depend on many factors including your body type, health status and personal desires. Our surgeons are highly experienced in masculinizing techniques for transgender men and will work with you to determine the right procedures to fit your needs.

We acknowledge that terminology regarding transgender identities is evolving. We are committed to staying informed and using accurate terminology and inclusive language as determined by the individual themself.
