Our practice recommends hair removal prior to Phalloplasty surgery. The blood supply in your donor site is not interrupted, therefore the hair that exists pre-operatively will continue to grow once moved to the “new” location. Although there is limited data, research has shown that the potential complications of hair bearing skin may include: post-voiding dribble, obstruction of urinary flow, which may result in a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).
We recommend that you start your hair removal as soon as possible. Hair removal can be a lengthy process and varies slightly depending on size of area and hair density of the area to be treated. You should allow at least 6-9 months for optimal hair removal. It is important that you do not have any hair removal sessions within 2 weeks of your surgery date.
Currently, electrolysis is the only method of permanent hair removal available. However, laser hair removal can also be complimentary.
