State regulatory bodies state that a postoperative surgical patient must have a responsible person accompany them home from surgery due to significant cognitive and psychomotor impairment after anesthesia. Post-op patients must be driven home in a suitable vehicle (not a bus or other form of public transportation) to ensure safety.
An Uber/Lyft or taxi driver is not considered a responsible person. To be deemed a responsible person, or caregiver, one must be able to make decisions for the patient’s welfare when necessary. In addition, the caregiver must comply with post-op requirements, i.e.: assist the patient with activities of daily living, dressing changes, emotional support, etc. The caregiver must accompany the patient throughout the entire recovery process.
In addition, it is required to secure safe, stable post-op housing. This may include the patient’s home, a hotel, or a close friend or relative’s home. Patients are strongly advised to stay within 30 minutes of the hospital during their recovery period. It is highly recommended to secure housing on a ground level floor, or in a facility with elevator access.
Surgery will be subject to cancellation if prior arrangements are not made for caregiver support and/or safe housing.
